DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) – On this Mother’s Day, some moms at the Wesley Woods Senior Living community in DeKalb County are worried about running out of retirement money.

“When you come and see the facility and what it has to offer and have a meal prepared for you, that means a lot to an older person,” said Jane Williams, who lives there.

Wesley Woods is able to offer all of that because of its benevolence care program, assistance provided to seniors who run out of money. Often, the pensions they receive are not enough to cover their cost of living. That’s where the Mother’s Day offering at United Methodist Churches comes in.

900 UMC churches across the state are raising money for Wesley Woods, taking up a special offering today.

“I think it’s great to support those who came before us and have given their life and all,” said Johnny Bearden, who goes to Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Buckhead.

“I think churches that participate to help and share their treasures and further the outreach is just one of the most precious thing they could ever do,” said his wife Becky.

Bill Britt is the Senior Minister of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church.

He said because so many seniors are outliving their resources, the church has to step up to help them out.

“It’s very helpful to have a retirement community like Wesley Woods here in Atlanta and the opportunity that we have as churches in the North Georgia Conference to take up an offering to provide supplemental financial assistance so they can live and age with grace.”

Last year donors gave more than 245 thousand dollars. Stay with CBS46 News to find out just how generous they are this year.
